Learning Experience Design

Designing learning that connects to real work.

Learning journey design, program architecture, and consultancy for L&D teams and internal trainers.

"Learning design starts with the end in mind: what does this person need to be able to do, and what's the most useful path to get them there? Everything else follows from that."

The thinking that happens before the room.

Learning experience design is the work of thinking carefully about how a program is structured and not just what content it contains. It starts from the outcomes you need and works backwards: what do people need to practice, in what sequence, with what support, and how will you know if it worked?

This thinking applies whether you're designing a single workshop or a multi-month development journey. A well-designed learning experience tends to produce more transfer to the job because it's built around how people actually learn, not around how much content can be covered.

I work both as a designer building programs for organisations and as a consultant and thinking partner for L&D teams who want to improve how they design and deliver learning internally.

Training An starting point where someone delivers content and participants practice under guidance.
Learning What happens inside people when they develop new capability over time, through practice and reflection.
Design The architecture that connects training events to actual learning: structure, sequencing, reinforcement, measurement.
The gap Most programs invest heavily in content and delivery, and almost nothing in the design layer. That's where the difference is made.

Two ways to work together.

The design work and the consultancy work are distinct but often a client needs both. I'm happy to work in either mode, or a combination of the two.

L&D Consultancy

Consultancy for L&D Teams & Internal Trainers

For L&D directors, HR managers, and internal trainers who want a thinking partner: someone to help them design better, identify gaps in their current approach, or build internal capability without outsourcing everything.

  • Audit of existing programs and design quality
  • Learning strategy aligned to business goals
  • Coaching for internal trainers and facilitators
  • Design review and consulting on specific programs
  • Frameworks your team can use independently
Standalone Design

Workshop & Program Design

When you need a specific workshop or short program designed from scratch, built around your context, your people, and a clear outcome. Includes full facilitation by me or preparation of materials for your internal facilitators to deliver.

  • Custom design for any topic or audience
  • Facilitation guide for internal delivery
  • Participant materials and resources
  • Design review of existing workshops

The same logic for every project.

Whether it's a three-day workshop or a six-month leadership journey, the process is the same: understand first, then design, then build, then think carefully about what happens after.

01

Start from the outcome, not the content

Before designing anything, I want to understand what behaviour change you need, who your people are, and where the real constraints are. The design follows from this, not from a content list.

Discovery
02

Design the architecture

I build the structure based on how people actually learn, what the right sequence is, what belongs in a workshop versus in application tasks, where reinforcement is needed. You see the full blueprint before we build anything.

Design
03

Build with your input

I work iteratively with your feedback at each stage. Content is grounded in your context, your examples, your language. If you have internal trainers, I involve them early so they can own delivery confidently.

Development
04

Deliver key sessions

For programs where I'm delivering, I bring 20 years of facilitation experience and visual thinking methods to every session, keeping people active, engaged, and actually working with the content.

Delivery
05

Think about what happens after

Transfer doesn't happen automatically. I help you design what comes next: application tasks, manager support, follow-up sessions and build measurement that goes beyond satisfaction scores.

Transfer & Measurement

Common starting points.

🏢

HR & L&D Managers

You want learning to be taken seriously by the business and by the people going through it. You need a thinking partner who understands both the science and the organisational reality.

"We invest a lot in training and I want to make sure the design is right."

🎯

Internal Trainers

You're a capable trainer who wants to go deeper into learning design, facilitation craft, or how to build programs that produce real transfer. You want a thinking partner, not another course.

"I want to design better, not just deliver better."

📈

Organisations in Transition

You're going through a change (new strategy, new structure, new ways of working) and you know learning needs to be part of how people get there.

"We need our people to develop new capabilities as part of this change."

Working internationally, remotely or in person.

Design, consultancy, and advisory work can be done fully remotely, no matter where you're based. For facilitation and training delivery I can travel internationally.
